North Carolina paycheck questions
Does North Carolina have income tax?
North Carolina has a flat 3.99% income tax and withholds at 4.09%. The NC-4 standard deduction is $12,750 for single and married filers and $19,125 for head of household; each NC-4 allowance is $2,500. Married people each file their own NC-4, so the deduction per paycheck is the same as for a single filer.
Are local taxes in North Carolina included?
No. City, county and school district taxes are not included in this estimate. If you pay one, your paycheck will be smaller than shown.
Do 401(k) contributions reduce Social Security tax?
No. Traditional 401(k) and 403(b) contributions lower the wages used for federal income tax, but not for Social Security and Medicare. Section 125 benefits (health, dental and vision premiums, and HSA contributions through a cafeteria plan) lower both. In Pennsylvania, 401(k) contributions are also subject to state income tax.
